This call came in a statement published by the Ethiopian army on its official Facebook page today.

In turn, the Ethiopian Attorney General, Yedion Timothy, stressed to reporters his conviction that the rebel groups that announced the formation of an alliance against the Addis Ababa government do not have social support on the ground, describing their new alliance as just a ploy directed at public opinion.

For his part, Ethiopian government spokesman, Beleny Seyoum, expressed Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's commitment to "a stable and peaceful Ethiopia."

Timothy and Seyoum urged journalists to avoid "media sensationalism" when covering developments on the ground in the country.

This comes against the backdrop of the Ethiopian government declaring a state of emergency for a period of six months, after the rebel forces advanced from the north towards the capital, Addis Ababa.
